Chartered Counselling Psychologist and EMDR Therapist

Qualifications and experience
I am a HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist and BPS Chartered Counselling Psychologist. I am also an EMDR Therapist and an EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner.
I have practised in an NHS Secondary Care Psychological Therapy service since 2008, offering brief and longer-term treatment for difficulties including: depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), psychosis, personality disorders, eating disorders, insomnia, interpersonal conflict, and bereavementI have also been working in private practice since 2019 and help a wide range of clients overcome stress, workplace anxiety, burn out, depression, trauma and relationship difficultiesI held a post for over ten years in an NHS Mental Health Recovery Team, where I offered assessment and brief therapies to individuals and families experiencing complex mental health difficulties. Prior to these NHS posts, I worked for five years in addiction and substance misuse services, where I helped people to reduce the harm associated with substance misuse and other addictive behaviours.
Current work and interests
I have developed a specialist interest in trauma therapy and mindfulness based approaches to therapy. I understand trauma to mean both overwhelming events that can lead to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and troubling events or relationships in the past that hold us back from functioning as well as we would like to in our daily lives. I am qualified and fully accredited as an Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist, which is an evidence-based and NICE guidelines approved treatment for trauma and PTSD.  

I find that mindfulness based approaches to therapy (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in particular) are extremely helpful in enabling my clients to (re) connect to their core values of who they want to be as a person, and in ‘stepping to one side’ of the day-to-day anxieties and stresses that can overwhelm us. These are useful skills for all of us to learn, and can be especially valuable when recovering from traumatic life events.

Approach to therapy

My core Counselling Psychology training was in the Humanistic, Cognitive Behavioural and Psychodynamic therapies, and I describe myself as an Integrative psychological therapist. This means I am able to draw on multiple models of therapy to develop a collaborative understanding with my client of the issue they want to work on.
